Combating Hard Water and Well Water Problems

Pros and Cons of the Cookie Diet

Let’s face it. Hard water and well water can cause a plethora of problems, from lime scale buildup and corrosion of pipes to major issues with home appliances, just to name a few. Over time, lime scale buildup also causes damage to washers and dryers, sinks, faucets, shower heads, toilets, dishwashers, swimming pools, ice machines and any appliance or system that comes into contact with water. Well water takes this burden to a whole new level, as it often causes unsightly stains to sidewalks, driveways and even the outside walls of a home. Consumers can test the hardness of their water by purchasing a hard water testing kit at their local pool supply store. Additionally, people on municipal water systems can often access their water report online. Many homeowners turn to water softeners to alleviate hard water and well water problems. But, did you know that water softeners are not necessarily the most environmentally friendly or healthy home improvement option?

Traditional water softeners work through ion exchange, meaning they exchange calcium and magnesium for sodium. This is why water softeners require lots of water and salt to operate. The excess sodium produced is eventually output into the environment, which is why some municipalities are enacting strict regulations and even bans on their use. Extra salt is consumed when the water is used for cooking and drinking, which is not ideal for people on salt restricted diets. At the end of the day, water softeners are costly and less healthy for you, your family and the environment.

An electronic water descaler – also known as an electronic water conditioner – is an ideal water softener alternative. It can be easily installed on the incoming pipe of your home, and it works with all types of pipes. Electronic water conditioners emit a silent sonic wave that changes the electrical and physical properties of calcium molecules. The result? They no longer adhere to pipe walls or fixtures that come in contact with water!

Electronic water conditioners are less expensive than most water softeners and require no maintenance or chemicals. And, since it works by using sonic waves, there are no filters to change. People who use electronic water conditioners report benefits including softer skin, brighter laundry, reduction in mold, mildew and corrosion, and being able to cut back significantly on the amount of soaps and detergents used bathing and cleaning. All in all, electronic water conditioners are an affordable and worthwhile home improvement investment.
